Experience one of the most scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with the7-day Machame Route trek. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” this path offers a gradual ascent, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and stunning landscapes, making it one of the most popular choices for climbers.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our team will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Attend a pre-trek briefing and equipment check by your professional mountain guide to ensure you are fully prepared for the climb.

MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME CAMP

After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration. Begin your trek through dense rainforest with towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and diverse wildlife. The trail ascends gradually until reaching Machame Camp, where you will rest for the night.
MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP
- Altitude: 3,000m to 3,840m
- Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
- Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
- Accommodation: Shira Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek through heather and moorland landscapes, leaving behind the rainforest. Enjoy panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks and surrounding valleys. Reach Shira Camp in the afternoon and acclimatize at this high-altitude plateau.
SHIRA CAMP TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP
- Altitude: 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then descend to 3,960m
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
- Accommodation: Barranco Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike towards Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point. After reaching 4,630m, descend to Barranco Camp, passing through the beautiful but challenging Barranco Valley. Enjoy a stunning sunset with views of the Great Barranco Wall.
BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
- Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m
- Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Accommodation: Karanga Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Climb the Great Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble. Continue across ridges and valleys, arriving at Karanga Camp, where you will rest and further acclimatize for the final ascent.
KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
- Altitude: 4,035m to 4,673m
- Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Accommodation: Barafu Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Ascend through alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit push. Rest early in preparation for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
UHURU PEAK & DESCENT TO MWEKA CAMP
- Altitude: 4,673m to 5,895m (Summit) then descend to 3,100m
- Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles)
- Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
- Accommodation: Mweka Camp
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Start the summit push around midnight, trekking through steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m), then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrations and photos, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.
DESCENT TO MWEKA GATE & DEPARTURE
- Altitude: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned shower and relaxation. Depending on your departure schedule, you may transfer to the airport or continue your Tanzania adventure.
